The Colonies and Interest Groups of Alpha Sigma KappaAlpha Sigma Kappa Colonies and Interest GroupsHow to Start an Alpha Sigma Kappa ColonyExpansion Through ColonizationBecause the sisters of Alpha Sigma Kappa, Women in Technical Studies feel that all women pursuing a degree in engineering or a related technical field can benefit from the friendship and support of AΣK, we are expanding to other campuses through colonization. As a National Organization, we keep the Colony's interests in mind as we develop into a national sorority. It is our goal to keep each Colony unique while becoming part of the larger organization. We recognize that each Colony brings its own history, values, standards, and membership. We respect this, and thus encourage Colonies to incorporate their uniqueness into the organization as a whole. Regional diversity, campus attitudes, and university requirements for technical majors may be taken into account when developing your own Chapter bylaws. It is our goal to keep the organization affordable for all members. We understand that time and money are in short supply for most students. As an organization, we try to keep the time requirements and financial commitments at a level reasonable for a student in technical studies to achieve. Therefore, National membership dues are kept low for all members. The Colony individually determines what time commitments and membership dues to require of their members. It is our goal to create an equitable atmosphere. Alumnae and Active members are given equal votes in national issues. Each Chapter votes on the National budget, and money is not spent by the National Organization until it has been approved. The budget is funded partly by your dues, and we feel that you deserve to know where and how that money is being spent. We want to keep the National officers accountable to the National Organization. Each office has a two-year term, allowing every member a chance to become a National officer.
Benefits to ColonizationAs a National Organization, we can provide a Colony with several advantages. Our National Organization will shortly be incorporated as a non-profit organization. If the Colony someday decides to purchase or lease a sorority house, the incorporated National Organization may sign the lease and puchase liability insurance. We are an associate member of the Panhellenic Council. This allows us to use their resources and experience as a guide towards developing into a National sorority. By being part of a National Organization, a Colony can share in the resources that are often only available to larger organizations. As a group, we have common goals. And, it is our belief that all women in technical studies can benefit from a National Organization that encourages women to become strong, intelligent and sociable.
Expansion ProcedureThe expansion procedure is started when women interested in starting a chapter of AΣK form an interest group. The interest group contact the AΣK National Director of Expansion to express their interest. AΣK National Expansion Representatives visit the interest group and their campus to tell the interest group more about AΣK and to get to know the interest group. Once the interest group has grown to ten members and decided they want to start a chapter of AΣK on their campus, they petition the AΣK national organization for colony status. A colony is a group of women who are learning about AΣK and setting up their organization as a chapter of AΣK. After one academic year and once all Colony requirements have been completed, they may petition the AΣK national organization for a Chapter Charter. Once their petition has been approved, all Colony members are intiated as Active sisters and the Colony is installed as an Active Chapter. If you are interested in learning more about starting an Alpha Sigma Kappa Colony on your campus, please contact our National Expansion Director. Our list of National Directors is on our National Organization Web Page. Don't forget to include your mailing address as well as a correspondence e-mail address. |
