Who is Alpha Sigma Kappa, Women in Technical Studies?
How is AΣK different from other sororities and societies?
|
Alpha Sigma Kappa is unique because it is a social sorority for technical majors. Our members are young women who place importance on academics but also have a lot of fun.
We accept women in Engineering, Architecture and the Sciences(including, but not limited, to Math, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science)
Our Greek letters represent the social aspect of our sorority. Through out the year, a variety of activities are planned. We also include quarterly philanthropy events on our calendar and provide many fun opportunities for its members without the high costs normally associated with social organizations.
|
Our formal name, Women in Technical Studies, represents our focus on academics and learning. Many members of our organization generally have classes together, and are always available for each other as a support group. Support is essential while pursuing a degree in engineering, mathematics, or any other technical major because we all meet the same large challenges.
We encourage friendship - between you and your fellow sisters, fellowship - helping others, and commitment - to yourself and the organization.
Our Flower is the White Rose, our colors are Royal Blue and Silver and the
Lioness is our symbol.
|
Purpose and Quality Goal
Our purpose is to promote friendship, academic achievement, unity within the organization, and philanthropy throughout the community.
We are a sorority of women committed to achieving our academic goals and promoting women in technical fields, through leadership, friendship, and support.
|
Definition of Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies
|
Our name is more than Greek letters. "Women in Technical Studies" was kept as part of the name to insure that we remember that our purpose is dual. "Alpha Sigma Kappa" represents our social side, while "Women in Technical Studies" recognizes our goal of academic achievement.
|
Our sorority is made up of women who are engineers and scientists. Women have an ever growing presence in these fields, but being a minority in undergraduate classes can be challenging. These challenges even extend to the role of professional women in meetings, work assignments, and promotions.
|
Opportunities in Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies
|
As a sorority, we give these women opportunities to develop leadership skills, friendships, a sense of belonging and a network of support. These qualities enable women engineers and scientists to better face their challenges as undergraduates and professionals.
Leadership skills are developed by holding offices, planning events, serving on committees, and working together, thereby developing strong interpersonal skills.
Friendships and a sense of belonging are developed through our big/little sister program, social events, intramural athletics, and being in classes together. A sense of belonging is a direct result of a relaxed social atmosphere. Our sorority provides social opportunities for all members, while recognizing that the active members are students first and foremost. Our chapters sponsor many different events. Involvement in homecoming and other Greek events allows the sorority to maintain a relationship with the Greek community. The sorority also holds quarterly dinners ("Feeding Frenzy"), sponsors wilderness retreats ("Sisterhood in the Woods"), and participates in intramural athletics. The list goes on and on, but it is our goal to provide a social atmosphere without jeopardizing academics.
The sense of belonging created as a student does not end when an active member graduates. Friendships created in school often continue after graduation. Through sponsored social events, such as an annual Founders' Day Celebration, and updated address lists, alumnae are kept in contact with other alumnae. As a result, friendships continue to grow and mature through time.
|
A developed network of support benefits both actives and alumnae. Active members often use this network to become better students. For example, many chapters have study groups that meet weekly as a way of keeping students on track and focused. Old test files are used to prepare for exams. Students who are having a difficult time in school are given help when it comes to studying. It is our goal for each member, as well as the sorority as a whole, to achieve academically. Some alumnae chapters offers academic and service scholarships to their active members.
Alumnae members also benefit from a career support network. Often, when an alumna or active member hears about a job opening, the information is passed on to other alumnae or actives that may be interested. With support from alumnae, members also become leaders in other professional organizatons. The opportunities are limitless with a developed network of support.
The network of support and sense of belonging makes it possible for Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies to succeed in meeting our quality goal and purpose.

Development of a Quality Goal
|
In May 1994, Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies developed the quality goal as described on the top of the previous page. With the help of Dr. Thomas Tapper, the actives created a "Commitment to Quality" document.
|
It outlines the value statements, objectives, indicators of success, characteristics of quality, and strengths and weaknesses of Alpha Sigma Kappa - Women in Technical Studies.
